Description:

This easy install flex cabble from Helder makes soldering the Picoboot mod much easier, there is no wires needed, you can simply create a solder bridge from the relevant pins on the IPL chip to the solder pads on the ribbon. The Pico board also installs in the same way, soldering from the pads on the Pico to the pads on the flex ribbon, no wires.

Warning: Soldering is required to install a Pico - Soldering difficulty level medium. Soldering experience is required even with an easy install flex, the flex simplifies the installation by having no loose wires to run aroung the console, making it easier to fit, but the difficulty of soldering is not solved with the use of this product. Install involves soldering to legs of an IC chip on the motherboard which are quite small, particularly for the less experienced in soldering. It is recommended you seek a professional installer if you are not used to soldering small pins. A good quality temperature controlled soldering iron and flux is advised. Incorrect installation couild result in things such as solder bridging pins on the IC chip, bad soldering may damage the motherboard once turned on, installation of a Pico into a Gamecube is done at the installers own risk.

Please note that the Picoboot mod is still a beta release and community project subject to change, the creator Webhdx is working on new firmware to fix a minor issue with the in game reset (IGR) and this this firmware may require the soldering of one wire in the future, there is no ETA on future firmware for Picoboot, the existing firmware is stable and the update will likely only resolve this IGR function or add future functionality that would be optional.

When installing a Pico into the GameCube you will need to remove the heatsink, in doing so the thermal pads might become damaged, or they might simply be warn and in need of replacement, we offer thermal pads specifically for the GameCube in store, it is recommended that you purchase new thermal pads when fitting a pico.

This flex is for the non W version of Pico

The Good and the Bad

After installing the ribbon cable for the Pluto HDMI mod I was sceptical and double checked both Helder’s website and the Picoboot Github as to what was needed.

Let’s get the moaning out the way first.

1. Helder’s website had a big warning about this ribbon cable missing something for a future Picoboot FW update to get IGR working, not sure I’m too bothered about this… plus Helder said it should be an easy fix adding just 1 wire. Haven’t looked into that further as the FW doesn’t exist yet anyway.

2. Then there’s the fact I can’t use the 3D printed holder I purchased with it as the ribbon cable is designed to place the Pi the other way around. I really don’t want to stick it to the fan but it look like I’ll have to.

Both points not raised by ZedLabz in the product information and they even suggest them as products often bought together??

Then there’s the good points which outweigh the above. The ribbon cable does have the protection diod built in. When reading the installation guide on GitHub it was saying about not wanting 5v to get shorted into any of the 3.3v data lines as it could cause damage but this diod only protects against reverse voltage not over voltage? Maybe I’ve missed something but at least it’s there as recommended.

The main thing I’m sold on is being able to run the ribbon under the shielding so I’m not hacking any more holes out of it for the cables.

As a side note, even after warming the heat sink up, getting it off with all the thermal pads in tack is near impossible so I recommend getting a set, ZedLabz didn’t have them in stock at the time so I got a set of sheet to cut my own elsewhere. 1mm, 1.5mm and 2.0mm are needed.

Overall, I’m happy.

Only recommend this if you are handy with soldering. Easily done at an amateur level so long as the right gear is owned.

A great solution for a clean mod install, would buy another one if needed
