Install the Pluto 2 internal HDMI mod the easier way with this custom designed Quick Solder Flex by Helder Game Tech.

This Mod requires the removal of the Digital Port and without proper tools and technique can ruin the small vias and traces in that area, potentially ruining the consoles motherboard.

Please only attempt this install if you are comfortable and experienced in soldering.

Features:

- Quick install flex cable for installing Pluto II HDMI board into the GameCube.
- Reduces wiring from approx 20 wires to 2 wires.
- Requires removal of the Digital port.
- Compatible with DOL-001 models of console.
- Pluto Board not included - Available separately subject to stock.

Description:

This easy install flex cable from Helder assists in the installation of a Pluto-IIx XC3S200 HDMI out mod, reducing wiring to just 2 wires in addition to soldering the points on this quick solder flex.

Please note the removal of the digital port is not easy and not for beginners, if you remove incorrectly you can damage the motherboard beyond repair, so please only install if you are comfortable with soldering, have good equipment and experience. This is a DIY mod and as such it is installed at your own risk.

The mod is compatible with DOL-001 consoles and requires a Pluto II board which is sold separately subject to availability.

The Pluto 2 is a development board programmed with GCVideo 3.1, the same software found on a number of plug in adapters, the output is 480p DVI though a HDMI socket, you can use a standard HDMI cable directly into a modern TV using this solution.

When soldering the ribbon cable in be sure to solder it the right way around, you should solder it onto the old digital out port with the flex cable showing the words " GC Digital socket top", if you cannot see this when soldering then you have it the wrong way around.

Good cable but with issues

Nice cable, lines up neatly with the latest Pluto II board. Well thought out and soldering is a breeze.

Had an issue with no audio, seems like the ribbon doesn’t like to be folded despite stating “fold here”. Soldered a cable from pin 21 on the digital port to pin 3 on the Pluto Board. Seems to have fixed this issue.

If I were to mod another GameCube I’d probably try without this cable as the pins on the GameCube and Pluto are well spaced.

Great effort

Maybe I have too many GCs but that’s a question for another day. Back in 2018 I purchased 3x Pluto boards to internally mod 3 of my GCs. It is a big job and after doing 2, I shelved the 3rd for nearly 7 years due to being a bit lazy.

After seeing this ribbon cable, I thought right let’s get the last one done.

Now I’ve done it, I remember removing the old digital port is actually the most painful part of this job. Followed by cutting up the shielding and shell. For me at least, soldering up a few cables wasn’t so difficult and both the ones I did back in 2018 worked first time.

The ribbon cable can’t sit flat due to a few surface mount components in the way, one of which absolutely wouldn’t let me position it correctly without carefully trimming some off the side of the ribbon cable.

Then when you gently fold it over, it doesn’t line up straight so you have to pull it about 5mm across to screw the Pluto board into position. Then you also find the ribbon cable covers one of the screw holes in the 3D printed bracket so now the board is only held on with 1 screw. Then it didn’t work for some reason, I managed to get it going but no idea how or what was wrong?

Anyway, they’re all done now and I don’t plan to do anymore. However if I was to do this mod again I think I might check to see if a new version had been released or just go back to individual wires.

Quick tip, if you’re not doing the picoboot mod as well, you don’t need to remove the heat sink. Check a photo to see where the chips are and you can easily thread the controller control wire through.

Ultimately, I do prefer the internal mod and I do recommend everything else. I already had my 3D printed brackets so I can’t really comment on them but the ZedLabz ones look the same.
