Solder selection notes
- SolderKing solder is a common modder choice for retro work, flows at lower temperatures, gives shiny inspectable joints. UK-made.
- Sc100e is also stocked as an alternative solder option.
- Spirig desolder wick in size AA is the standard width for board-level rework, fine enough for SOIC pins, wide enough for through-hole.
- Flux choice: ChipQuik NC191 is no-clean (no residue rinse needed); SolderKing's flux pen suits touch-up work; SolderKing rework gel is for difficult removal jobs.

Soldering Supplies. FAQs
What's no-clean flux for?
No-clean flux (like ChipQuik NC191) leaves residue that's electrically inactive at room temperature, so you don't have to clean it off the board after soldering. Useful for fine-pitch work where rinsing is awkward. Some modders still rinse for cosmetic reasons; functionally, residue is benign.
Do I need both desolder wick AND a desoldering pump?
For most retro mods, wick is sufficient. A pump is faster on through-hole desoldering (older console headers, cartridge pins). Buy wick first; add a pump if you find yourself doing a lot of through-hole rework. Our tool kits collection stocks both.
What soldering iron should I start with?
A temperature-controlled iron with a fine tip, the Miniware TS101 is a popular starting iron in the retro modding community. Avoid uncontrolled "fire stick" irons; the temperature swings damage solder joints and components. See our tool kits collection for the full range.
